♫ Joakim & DJ Morpheus - Give Us Something (Dub)The dub version of the new Joakim and Morpheus collaboration released by the Tigersushi label is, out of all three tracks on this EP, my favorite. Guests on this record include Panico's guitarist Memo Dumay and former Minimal Compact singer Samy Birnbach. An updated version of that rolling bassline, punk-funk-disco sound, it's still highly derivative of tunes like this:
♫ Material - Secret Life
One of the most prolific American musicians, bass guitarist Bill Laswell birthed one of his earliest projects, no-wave, avant-funk group, Material, in late 70s/early 80s New York. "Secret Life", one of Material's first creative endeavors (which you can grab on compilations released by Jungle Records) and other disco fueled numbers were popular in the underground dance circuit in the city at the time. However, being a child of the 80s, the first time I heard this track was in a Digitalism DJ set. Can't go wrong there.
A few tidbits before I pack up for the evening:
Some sneaky little devil uploaded the Optimo Essential Mix on the Erol Alkan forums here. Simply brilliant. Even includes an old favorite, Sparks' "Beat the Clock".
This Sunday night (November 26th), I'll be doing a DJ set at The Annex on the Lower East Side. It's absolutely free and there's an "all you can drink" special from 10pm-2am which means you'll be too intoxicated to care about my substandard mixing.
Cliktrax Jen just sent me the flyer for the next Modular Monthly. After weeks of declining the invitation to DJ I somehow wound up in the line up. But despite being nervous, I'm rather excited to be a part of this show and to have my name alongside New Young Pony Club (who are making their US debut), Thieves Like Us and Juan Maclean. You can buy tickets here.
Thank you thank you thank you. For the good music, and the link on your site... Keep bringing the good shit.
